HOMEWORK Week 4: Introduction to the Recall (SSIF=Straight Sit in Front)

This is the introduction to the Recall. To teach the Recall the dog has to know 6 things. How to hold a Sit/Stay, it's name, who you are, how to get to you, and what to do when it gets to you (Sit), and the bridging word "Yes".

This is the first time we will teach a dog to 'string a series of commands' to create a new command. This is the first time, the dog learns that the last command given, in this case Sit/Stay is now superseded with a new command, "Fido, Come, yes, Sit, Good dog".  Here's the sequence again:

Fido
Come
Yes
Sit
Good Dog

The dog is learning to listen, to wait for the new command, and to then follow the new command which supersedes the prior command.

  1. when Izzy comes and does her sit in front of me its almost like she tries to sit in the heel position, so she is kind of sideways, should I worry about correcting her so she's sitting straight on?

  2. Yes that is why we use a Front Place Board to shape the dog into SSIF. SSIF = Straight Sit in Front . We shape the dog into this new Sit position to train them to Sit where we tell them to Sit. We start with the Passive Sit, in Heel position, then we teach SSIF, Sit square facing owner, then we teach Active Sit in Week 6 (more on that exercise later). All these Sits are the foundation for the Moving Sit, which morphs into the Random Sit, which then eventually becomes the Whistle Sit which not only can save a dog life, but is an absolute requirement for ant field work.
